MG MG Y Type - Rim Colour, YT

Reading the "News" article of Terry Ciantar, I also looked at the YT Brochure October 1948, inside 2. There, one clearly can see that the rims are painted two tone, with the centre portion distinctively darker than the outer rim section. Until now, I went by the believe that the YT's rims where painted "one colour" beige/sand.
Could it be that the picture shown in the 1948 catalogue was taken of a proto type car?

Hi Anton

Trick of the light on a black and white photo. The light has caught the outer part of the rim whereas the inner part of the rim closest to the chrome hubcap is actually in shadow. I guess the flash or lighting or film was just not good enough and has created a contrast and that is all. The rims were all one colour and usually (although some limited evidence suggests they were a different colour) they were body colour.

Guess the important thing is that you have 4 (or 5 if you count the spare) the SAME colour, although 4 or 5 different colours could be interesting and make tyre rotation easier - LOL :-)!!

Cheers

Hi - As we all know assembly of components on a production line at any factory of the '40/50s was not an exact science. When the normally specified part was not available the line didn't stop. A substitute part was fitted.
Hence some YTs may have had wheels of body colour but David Lawrence strongly indicates cream/ivory (and now yellow with ageing!)was the dominant fitting. Our clipper blue YT has yellow wheels and the spare is obviously the original.
Also remember YTs and YAs were coming down the line together so wheel swapping cannot be ruled out to keep the line moving.
Another point is that a buyer could specify a different wheel colour at extra cost when placing his/her order with the dealer.
Dealers did have the ability to make changes to specifications. For instance all TFs imported into Australia were fitted with wire wheels as ordered by the dealers. Whereas in USA and UK (and probably elsewhere) dealers ordered a mixture of wires and solid wheels due to cost (wires were more expensive)and expected buyer demand. That's why there is a mixture in those two major markets. Rob

Dear Paul and Rob
Sorry, about my delayed "Thank You". I seem to recall that 22 years ago, when I aquired my YT, that the rim colour was black, just as the body-colour was. The car was completely original, bur very very tatty. I am still digging for the photograph, I took on the day of delivery....
What made me start thinking was David Lawrence remark about the sand coloured YT rims. Never the less, I still have time to make up my mind about which way to paint. If I decide to go for the beige, is there any colour reverence arount (code)?
