MG MG Y Type - Replacement sump plug & magnet
| Just for info - as I was not aware of this. If you buy a new sump plug (as I did recently) then you can have the option of a small magnet which sits in it - but be aware that you have to glue it to the inside base of the sump plug otherwise it will come out and get into the sump. Advice from the supplier is: "...the sump plug needs to be deeply scored around its bore with a sharp tool and then de-greased. This should provide a key for the adhesive. Two pack Araldite works well, and just enough needs to be put in the bottom of the bore so that when the magnet is pressed in, some of the Araldite can flow over the magnet forming a concave surface. It's best if only a mm or so of Araldite covers the magnet but extends a few mm up the wall of the bore." |

| This is not a new idea - the Mini has had a magnet fitted to its sump plug from its launch. It is suprising how much ferrous metal fragments are attached to the magnet when the plug is removed for regular oil changes. Interesting bearing in mind the Issigonis link between the Y and the Mini! |

| If anybody is looking to buy a replacement XPAG Sump Plug with the correct head and the magnet already fitted I would recommend Roger Furneaux. Roger's part number is XA040 and on the price list (accessible from the links page on the Y Register site) it is quoted as £5.50. I bought three from Roger at Beaulieu many years ago and fitted them to my YA, YT and TD that I had at the time. No problems with magnets becoming detached to date. Regards. | Remember though that there is no link between the engine per se and Issigonis and the XPAG. The reason a magnetic plug was incorporated into the A Series engine as fitted to the BMC Mini was because it also incorporated the gear box as part of the sump. Paul |
