MG MG Y Type - Rebuilding the Oil Pump
I recently completed a rebuild on the YT, and quickly lost oil pressure after starting the car. When I pulled the pump, I found that the teeth on the gear that drives the oil pump were broken and the shaft was bent. The problem was insufficient clearance between the gears and cap. It is extermely important that you measure the end float and obtain .oo2" clearance. The manuals that I was using mentioned the clearance between the gear and the body, but did not mention the end float.

Sadly enough you most likely will have to replace camshaft. At least pull and inspect. for me looking up from down under is definitelt not sufficient. Sandy

If the cam gear is damaged, dont replace the cam - that is going to be very expensive. Send the cam to Delta Cams in Tacoma, WA and they will rebuild it for you - not only reprofiling the lobes, but also cleaning the oil pump and distributor gears. Ask for an MG TD profile for a YT. I think mine was about $150 including return shipping via UPS and they were a quick turn around too. Post again if you need contact details or check out www,dexknows.com for them. Paul

Hello Mike. You will also find that the gears wear differently in the body. So if you have both gears exactly the same height they will have different clearances to the cover. Also the new shafts are not made from solid stock, as original, they are made in two pieces and the gear is pressed on and pinned. If you need help, contact me. Butch
