MG MG Y Type - Rear shock bush replacement
| Sorry that this is such a generic (non-Y-specific) query, but I need to replace at least one of the bushes in my rear shock link. I've had a look in my manual and on the MossEurope site and the task looks like quite a bit of a hassle with the necessity for special tools :-( Immediate Questions: Am I best just to get this done by someone with a clue (and the necessary equipment)? Am I best (while I'm fiddling about) to replace all four rear shock bushes (one in shock-arm-eye and one in link-eye on each side)? The manual says you should try to keep the shock upright so that air doesn't get into it. Surely that's going to be pretty tricky when vertically pressing the new bush into the arm-eye, unless the arm is removed from the shock (which I guess is something to avoid)? If I do get a garage to do the job then do I take them the whole car or do I remove the shock and link from the car and just take them those? i.e. how tricky is removal of shock and link? Many thanks in advance. Saul and his rattley YT. |

| Saul From memory I believe when I did this I simply removed the shock and link from the car and had it pressed out and new ones pressed in by a shop with a hydraulic press. Yes they had to put the shock on its side for a short while when they did the pressings but it wasnt long enough to induce air etc. I would suggest before you tilt yours over though that you ensure that they are full of fluid then that way air will not be able to get in unless you have weak seals ... in which case you will soon find out! Andrew Sorouni just sent in some details of how to replace the seals so check that out too. If you are going to do one link bush, I would suggest that you might as well actually do all of them at the same time. Paul |

| Hi Saul I had rear passenger bounce problems and one of the bushes in the shocks was shot so I looked for a complete overhaul there are a couple of companies that specialise in this but I found them expensive and they both had a long turnaround (months). I finished up sending mine to NTG they had it sorted in a few weeks for £255. Easy to remove from the car and replace Has made a tremendous difference to the ride especialy over speed bumps and poor road surfaces where in the past I would have had to slow down or take off.
