MG MG Y Type - Rear Axle Conversions - Y-Type
| The standard final drive ratio in the Y-Type (5.143) is great for climbing hills and mountain ranges, but is a little high for cruising at 100km/h. I have used a Morris Minor (BMC) diff centre (4.55) in my YT for a while now and find the reduced engine revs at highway speed a lot less stressful. The car still climbs hills OK, but you often have to drop another gear than would have been required with the standard ratio. The banjo housing and sun gears have to be modified/changed, and this is not for an amateur to try. The BMC diff centres are also very hard to find these days. However, if there are Y-Typers in the Melbourne Australia area looking for alternative BMC diff centres to fit in their cars, a fellow Y-Type enthusiast has a few to sell. Express your interest here, before they all go to the rubbish tip. There is an alternative ratio chart on the Tech Centre of the Y-website so you can decide on the ratio you want (www.mgytypes.org) |

| Hi Tony: Good to meet you in Adelaide. Firstly I can't find the alternative ratio chart on the Tech Centre, but it is now of acedemic interest only. At one time I had a bit of an interest in changing the rear end ratio but I could not figure out what to use. Then on thinking on it I came to the conclusion that it was not a good idea. I live in mountain country and on mountain passes the 5.143 ratio works. In any event I had gearbox problems that couldn't be fixed. So about 3 years ago I picked up a Hi Gear 5 speed box. So now I have the best of both,60 MPH at 3000 RPM in 5th gear and I can climb most hills in 4th without having to gear down. The 5 speed box transforms the car and I can't recommend it highly enough. | Terry I will post this presently as Tony thought he had sent it to me previously. I will send you a copy in the interim. Paul |
