MG MG Y Type - Rain shine roof

The advantage in what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over, was revealed when I removed the head lining [see image], The rear drain channel fell down showering me with rust. Thanks Paul for your offer and will contact you when I have ascertained the full damage.

Sure thing Brian - no worries.

I cannot remember that particular channel piece in detail, but as far as I can remember it is a fairly straight forward U channel pressing that a fabricator should be able to replicate.

If you find you are having difficulties getting someone over there to make one up for you, drop me a note on that too with the dimensions as we have a number of good fabrication shops here on the harbor who will be able to knock a piece like that out on a press brake in no time. I can then send it over with the roof liner hoops and it wont add much to the shipping cost.

I had this problem back in the late 80s - you have 2 choices. Cut out and weld new pieces if it's too badly corroded - or (as in my case with small areas of rust and some small holes) use fibreglass and seam sealer. If you hand paint over this once hardened it works well but it only works if there are only small holes. Welding is better of course but more awkward. Beware of getting welding done by someone who is not competent at it as it will only make it worse and don't weld over rust!

If any one needs a drawing to get a new channel made I have one which I drew and had a new one made from. Please e-mail me and I will send a pdf copy of the drawing
Hope this helps

Thanks for the offer, just at the moment a local fabricator is making a straight channel section into which I intend to cut a series of slots with fillets in order to give an approximate curve, and then the useable top section [fitted with the rope buffer] recovered and pop riveted on [stainless rivets]. I will silver solder drain stubs to the folded channel ends. The only problem as I see it is that the end part of the roof runner has broken on one side, and this could restrict the roof travel. Obviously I will need to prevent further rusting on existing sections and need advice on a suitable spray [not too toxic] and finish. Bryan
