MG MG Y Type - Paint jobs
Hello, Has anyone had their Y stripped and resprayed? I'm looking into it at the moment and have no idea what to expect, it seems stripping is an issue because of the lead based paint and presumably it would have to be sent elsewhere, I would just add another coat but it's already had this done once and this is peeling off so it seems the best way would be a complete strip down. Anyone had any costs or estimates too? Matthew

Matthew Would worry about the lead bases paint issue - it all comes off with a gallon or so of Nitromors (Green) and a scraper. Not following the instructions on the tin WILL give you a less effective strip. You can do this yourself and you dont need to send it anywhere. Just be aware that the car is a lot bigger than you image! Remove in advance all chrome and pot metal including the boot hinges, bonnet catches etc. and store for refit. Take the bonnet off and saddle it across a couple of saw horses, oil up the brass center hinge pin and with a suitable long drift and someone holding the hood down, drift the pin out. Once it is out a couple of inches then your helper should be able to wiggle it out with a vice grip and lots of penetrating oil. Then it is good old fashioned GRAFT. Paul

Matthew, I had my YB resprayed, started in 2006 and didn't go back on road till 2008 after finding lots of horrors beneath the old paint. I can recommend a Carmichael Sports Cars LTD near Romsey in Hants. Did excellent paint finish on my YB, and allowed me to paint strip and dismantle in his work shop. http://www.carmichaelsportcars.co.uk/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1206294/Goes-like-BULLITT-How-James-Martin-rebuilt-Steve-McQueens-iconic-Mustang.html Above may be useful. Just remember paint work respray isn't cheap or for the faint hearted. Sent me round the bend! Regards Richard
