MG MG Y Type - Not a rip-off, rather a stick-on

Ever since I have owned Y5100 there has been a little slop in the steering between moving the steering wheel and something happening where the rubber meets the road.

I had put it down to old age. (The car's, not mine!) However when it was in for its last MOT my friendly mechanic decided to delve deeper. He was aware of the slop from earlier visits but also was could see that there was no wear or slack in any of the linkages or steering so decided it must be between the steering wheel and column.

He removed the steering wheel and noted that there was no more travel available on the taper and it was here that the wear was apparent and the cause of the slop.

Years ago an aeronutical engineer client had presented him with a role of adhesive backed aluminium tape used on aircraft. He dug this out and carefully cut a section to fit the taper on the steering column without covering the key-way.

Once the steering wheel was refitted the slop was gone and the steering is as responsive now as it presumably was when it left the showroom in 1950.

The cost for this care and attention? £0.00

Regretably, he is selling the business, I will miss that sort of service.

This occured on my YA a long time ago and so I cut some 2thou shim steel as a bodge [I mean modification]. It has worked fine but obviously I never told the MOT tester. You have lightened the burden on my conscience.

I use aluminumfoil to fill the slop on my distributor rotor, works fine!

These are no bodges. I'd like to think of them as cutting edge precision engineered modifications, borne out of a finely honed sense of perfection, coupled to a deep understanding of the necessary engineering to reach a clearly defined goal.

Can I congratulate Willem on his grasp of english which seems to be a lot better than most Englishmen.

Thanks for the compliment Michael, but I'm only inspired by the rich English used by C.A.N. May in his excellent "Wheelspin Abroad" that I bought from you some time ago. Reading that kind of English would improve anyone's English.
