MG MG Y Type - New Hood
| After some 30 years I am having the hood on my YT replaced. I rather regret it as the material is first rate. The chap who did it back in the 70s used what he called Mercedes cloth. Good stuff but heavy and the hood was always difficult to raise( 4 hands) and to stow properly. For some reason about two years ago the hood became virtually impossible to put up. Shrinkage? But why after almost 30 years? In taking the hood off I have got all the holes and fasteners described by Lawrence pages 148/9 but find that the back of the hood storage compartment is lined by celluloid covered by leather cloth.Lawrence says p 201 that this is untrimmed. The existance of this trim no doubt contributed a great deal to the difficult storage of the hood as it takes about 1/4 of the limited space for hood storage. The result was that the hood storage( after folding the hood in the manner described in the Owners Manual) was mainly on the top of the stowed side curtains. Hasn't done the side curtains any serious damage but twisted one a bit out of shape. Has anyone else run into this extra trim? Does anyone know the secret of stowing the side curtains so that they are a proper fit in a stowage compartment that seems to be designed as too small? Terry |
