MG MG Y Type - Never trust (Dutch) MG history books
Yesterday I received a beautiful book issued by the Dutch MGCC commemorating it's 50th birthday. In it there are stories by long term members and I was pleased to be mentioned at least three times myself. One texts refers to how over the years people started to restore their MG's and a few examples are mentioned; first: the TF owned and restored by Henk Boerboom that won a historical first place in the Silverstone concours in the early 70's; shocking several Britons that a bloody foreigner got highest honour. second: the stunningly beautiful TA Park Ward owned and painstakingly restored from a complete wreck by Hemmo de Groot. His website on this very important car says all: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hemmo/start.htm third: the Y owned by me, Willem van der Veer! This is where history is falsified because although I enjoy my decidedly tatty Y immensly, IT IS NOT AN EXAMPLE OF A DUTCH TOP RESTORATION!!!! This comment on restoring MG's was echoed from a book about "80 years of MG in Holland". The writer of the article visited the same MG-meeting as I did in the Y and was apparently impressed by my polishing efforts. Long live tyre-shine!! Anyway, I (again) cried with laughter about this mis-information but feel a bit embarressed and sorry for Henk and Hemmo to see their enormously impressive efforts compared to my polishing the car on a sunny saturday afternoon.

Admit it Willem, you are just showing off ! If you come and see me I will show you the engraved tankard that I won for best in class at the Harrogate MG club Northern MG show where there were hundreds of MGs. Andrew Coulson will tell you that I only won because in an entry of two, my Y was only slightly less shabby and unpolished than his. Don't stop taking the tablets. Michael

Just goes to show that you cannot believe everything you read ... unless you read it on www.mgytypes.org! :-) Paul
