MG MG Y Type - My clutch, the continuing story..
| Yesterday at about 15.30 I finished fitting the clutch and cleaning the interior in preparation of THE TESTDRIVE. I pulled the starterknob and was answered by a loud click of the startermotor and nothing happened. The engine was stuck solid! Optimistically I tapped and loosened the startermotor hoping it was stuck; it wasn't. Pessimistically I took out the sparkplugs (breaking one to add to my already rising anger/frustration), suspecting some waterlock; of course there wasn't. I ripped out the gearbox in 75 minutes flat to discover that the DPO mated a SC2 engine (with the 8" clutch) to the old 7,25" bellhousing. The bellhousing was machined to clear the bigger clutch, BUT the new pressure plate housing was 1mm higher/deeper than the one fitted and thus I bolted the bellhousing tightly against the clutch, jamming the engine..... I removed a further 1mm from intruding parts in the bellhousing and refitted the gearbox. I was VERY pleased that my bodge worked. Tonight I'll fit the floorboards and clean the interior for THE TESTDRIVE. Hopefully NOT continued!!! |
