MG MG Y Type - Motometer ?

I was looking at the Moss catalog today. I'm considering buying one of their radiator caps fitted with a Boyce Motometer in order to monitor the water temperature with style.

Can anyone please tell me if they work well or if they are just an expensive decoration?

Thank you & best regards,

Gilles,

For our climate I would suggest just keep an eye on it. With one of the lovely aluminum Rad Cap spanners (or wrenches) that are available from the MG Y Register (for about the same price as a nasty wooden Moss one) it doesnt take but a minute to whip the cap off and stick your finger in. If the end gets wet, you are OK, if not - either you have short fingers or you need some water! Personally, I wouldnt bother with one of the manometer things - they are a beggar to seal so you dont loose water out of your cap that you wouldnt otherwise have done!!

PS keep antifreeze in your system all year round to help avoid corrosion - the XPAG is a thermo-syphoning non-pressurized system.

To work well the feeler has to be immersed in coolant. I think the Motometer comes with different sizes in probes, so try to get the longest.

As an expensive decoration they work very well. Personally I think that is a bit too much '30ish. In the 50's an inboard temperature gauge was the norm?

Who was it that said; "the lesser the gauges, the lesser the worries?"
Willem van der Veer

I like to know whats going on under the bonnet and the absence of a temperature gauge on my Y Type always unsettled me slightly, so I fitted a Boyce Motometer a couple of years ago. I've found it useful, and although its probably not very accurate it gives a general indication of coolant temperature. Willem is correct in saying that the probe lengths vary and must always be in contact with the coolant to work properly. Mine is 35mm long measured from under the cap and proved to be a bit short until I made up a radiator expansion tank as detailed in Technical Centre (Hints & Tips) some time ago. This great little device maintains the coolant level at a constant 27-28mm below the rad. neck, and the rad. hasn't needed topping-up since I fitted it a year ago.

Having said all that, you may not need to bother with this if you can get a Motometer with a longer probe. I don't know what Moss are supplying as my Motometer came from an autojumble.
