MG MG Y Type - MOT Certificate
Very Pleased, Y4002 (UMG 79) collected an MOT certificate on Friday last, the first in 11 years! Due to flood damage to the engine after after just over a thousand miles following a complete rebuild she was laid up whilst other domestic priorities were satisfied. In May this year, I was allowed to spend a little (!) bit of money Engine was re-sleeved back to standard, new big end and mains, lead free head, fast road cam. Brakes repaired, bronze sleeved cylinders, new pistons, seals etc. New bushes and seals etc. in suspension. Impressions: Brakes: send a post card! although they registered 80% on the test, they take some getting used to after servo assisted ABS disc brakes. Steering and Handling: Very positive, especially on smooth tarmac, on our local roads with very poor surfaces she jumps all over the place! Engine: at 55 miles so far, I'm keeping the speed down to 40mph in top Very "tappity" but thats because I've set them at 19 thou, but probably with the new cam they should be 12 thou, deal with that over the weekend. Grandson loves her, picked him up from school today, other parents suitably impressed. Problems: (1) my feet are too big! fouling brake and throttle, can't find dip switch. Rediscovered an old pair of (narrow) shoes, now I can drive again! (2) She smokes! initially I put it down to copious amounts of copper grease either side of head gasket and lots of STP on all the moving bits, plus not yet run in. At tickover/idle is worst, when running light, fine, pulling as in slight rise - smoke, overrun then open throttle - clean. Plugs don't show any signs of oiling, it's too early to measure oil consumption. Now to finish off the interior, new carpets fitted today, replacement door linings under way, (wife's sewing machine copes well with the carpet/leather cloth, don't tell her though!) Looking forward to getting some more miles on the road during the summer. So far, (touch wood) no oil leaks, stuck to original oil seal at rear, plus a new lip seal at front. All main parts purchased through Octagon Car Club who were excellent, good service, speedy delivery, and good advice. David

Has anyone tried the brake servo kit referred to by Carlo Romero in 'Totally T Type' which can be fitted to a TC? Bryan ps Well done David.

I shouldn't worry overmuch about the smoking unless you have other problems. There is a section in the MOT regulations, 7.3 Exhaust Emissions, that says "Note: Older vehicles, particularly pre-1960. may emit unavoidable smoke due to their design. Such smoke is not a reason for rejection." My Y smoked somewhat especially immediately after a period of idling, and I was ready to do battle with the MOT inspector. He left it idling in his workshop and it was like a gas attack on the Somme. However he was an old pal so I had no trouble. The reason for smoking in my case was partly down to using 10% kerosene mixed with the petrol to lower the octane rating. I would recommend it. the engine ran better, pulled better and there is no fuel duty on kerosene. There are a few simple issues to deal with, not least of which is to get a licence from customs & Excise to use kerosene, otherwise it is illegal. I have quite a bit on file on the subject so if anyone wants it, email me. Michael

David regarding old smokey, perhaps oil is being sucked down the valve guides. now doubt the excellent fit of the pistons in the cylinders causes a really good vacuum particularly during overun. Many years ago my first motorcycle a 1939 250cc Triumph Tiger 70 had an adjustment screw on the oil feed to control the flow to the rockers and this over came the problem. This I sort of copied on my YA by filling the top oil feed banjo screw with solder and then drilling a 1/16 bleed hole which reduced the flow to the rockers. You can also fit MG Midget valve oil seals when next you have the lid off. If you do elect to restrict the oil flow always ensure that oil is seeping from number one rocker bleed hole. As for my Triumph well I lent it to a neighbour who gave it to a scrap dealer while I was away doing military national service! Bryan
