MG MG Y Type - Leather repair
| I want to try and restore UHK 111s seats. I don't want to recover them as that would destroy the interior's patina (!). Do you know of anyone able to restore old leather seats - ie. patch holes and clean up? Thanks. |

| Hi Marc It really depends on how badly the leather has split. Sometimes it is possible to repair/patch, sometimes it may be more expedient to let in a whole section of leather since you do not wish to go the recover route. When I was in the UK I used a guy in Southampton (Paul Farmer) who was an ex-Connolly man and very good. I can give you his details if you like. Another person you might try is Bryan Purves (www.bryanpurves.co.uk) who may be closer to you or able to suggest someone who is if he cannot help you. Bryan's business line is +44 (0)1342 315009. | I cleaned my original seats with a soft brush and saddle-soap and after that I fed them several times with leathergrease(?). I now maintain them twice a year with Connoly hide-food. Feeding the leather can best be done in the "burning" sun; when the leather is hot it will absorb the products much better. Depending on the budget the solutions for holes are endless, from (locally) letting in of sections as Paul suggest to full preservation by a specialist restorer. One route may have surprising results; try to ask your local bus-operator where they have their seats repaired. Very often those (vandalised) seat are repaired almost invisibly with a special process and I think that can be done with leather, too. |
