MG MG Y Type - Laminated windscreen
Were laminated windscreens ever produced for the YB. I have a toughened glass screen on UHK111 but according to the Silverstopne regs it needed a laminated screen to race in 54..

Not as far as I know Marc. I cannot recall how the market is though ov there in the UK as I have been spoilt by the consumer orientated attitude of a small local windshield shop here that made a laminated screen up for my Y/T here at very reasonable cost. Shop around and let me know how you get on. Worst ase senario we could probably get one made here, crated up and shipped to you. Paul

Regarding the YB windscreen replacement. We have a MG TD which has a similar windscreen and we rang a local Plant Hire Company and they come and cut one on site which was laminated with kite mark for insurance purposes. Hope this helps. As a matter of interest we have just started restoring Y0272. Regards Keith

Is the plant hire firm part of a national chain or a one-off local firm? It would be useful if it was national. I had a problem earlier this year getting replacement glass for my 1934 Lanchester LA 10. I needed a new drivers door window and replacement wind deflectors for the tops of the doors. All were flat and originally made from the 'wonderful new development' at the time - Triplex laminated glass. I had the originals for patterns. I spent many hours trying to find someone who would cut replacements. None of the usual vehicle glass suppliers were interested; commercial vehicle specialists were likewise. Several local glass suppliers could have done it, but they could not legally kitemark them. It seems that MOT testers should check for kitemarks on vehicle glass now. I pointed out that there were no kitemarks in 1934, but to no avail - 'more than my jobsworth'. I eventually found a small decorative glass specialist local to me who was prepared to cut the new glass for me - either laminated or toughened to my choice. Mike
