MG MG Y Type - How many Y's in the US ?
| Just saw an old friend of mine in Newport RI (USA) and he just acquired a Y type roadster , the guy he bought it from said only 6 of them were ever imported to the US ... Any truth? |

| The YT (Y Tourer rather than Roadster) is a rare car; less than 900 manufactured but not quite as rare in the US as the previous owner implied. The Factory Records for all Y Types were destroyed in the 1960s and we have tried to recreate the records for YTs over a number of years. MG manufactured a specific version of the YT for the North American Market, known as the YT/EXU (EXU representing Export Market to the USA) but in reality it meant North America , as Canada was also a target market. Research to date confirms that at least 64 YT/EXU models have been identified; although I suspect the figure actually to be a multiple of this. In addition to the EXUs there are also a number of EXL (Export Left Hand Drive) and EXR Models (Export Right Hand Drive) – All YTs were made for export as part of the recovery drive after World War 11. At present we know of at least 63 cars in the USA, this being a combination of the various models as some of the original EXUs have been exported to Europe. If you look at YTs on Parade, on the Y Register Website you will see some of the cars that have survived the last 60 years, many of which are representing the USA. It would be great if details of the car could be e-mailed to me (chassis number etc) and I cam ensure that your friend's car has been recorded as a 'survivor' in our records. prman@mgytypes.org Regards |
