MG MG Y Type - Help! Collapsed rear suspension
Following some vigorous cornering and an unexpected pot hole at the Crystal Palace sprint today my right rear suspension broke. The bracket welded to the chassis that the flexible shackle attaches to (at the back of the spring) has sheared in two. It had rotted from the inside. I presume the bracket will need to be cut off and a new one fabricated and welded on? Does anyone know where I can get such a bracket?I can't see any on the NTG or MGOCC web sites. I had entered the car for the Jersey International Festival of Motoring this coming weekend but looks like I will now miss that ( a lot of money down the pan). Still, better it broke at low speed rather than on the circuit at Goodwood (where I was a few weeks ago...).

Marc Tony Slattery may have one on the Y he is about to take to the junk yard. Drop him a line - see his note below on the BBS. Paul

Marc, That is more than a bracket - it should be a one piece tobe that passes through both chassis rails supporting the rear of the springs both sides. I would suspect that the other side may fail as well, so my suggestion is you replace the complete tube with a slightly thicker wall tube. I have one of these broken tubes complete with spring bracket in my shed - yours is not the first to fail. From personal experience, motor sport is dangerous enough without taking shortcuts in car preparation - I did that once, and suffered the consequences. You should be able to do this without completely removing the body from the chassis, but it won't be easy, and any welding near the fuel tank is fraught with danger.

The restoration page on the link below, in the chassis section, shows some good pictures of the rear chassis and the tube Tony is reffering to. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/imgytr/specialys/yb0805.shtml
