MG MG Y Type - headlight globe holders

A fellow Y Type owner has recently purchased 2 headlight globe holders from NTG, he tells me he is having dramas in getting them in the reflector far enough, and apparently is considering modifying the reflector. I gather he needs to get the extra insertion for focasing reasons. I hope that makes sense to knowledgable owners, as I'm a little confused. Any ideas please.
