MG MG Y Type - H2 throttle spindle fix: bodge or brilliant?
| In preparation of some serious summer touring I decided to give the SU H2 carburettor some long overdue attention. One of the problems was that I wasn't able to get a lean enough mixture at idle. This caused me a lot of head scratching until I discovered that the cork upper jet gland was leaking. The high vacuum at idle sucked extra fuel through the leaking gland. When I tried to get a good mixture at idle I had to lean out the jet to the stop: not good, because this in turn caused a very lean mixture at higher revs. This leakage is now (hopefully) stopped by some high-tech Vitron/teflon rings. Of course the throttle spindle was worn causing "false air" to be sucked in, again to play havoc with the idle mixture. Normally I would order a new spindle but as I had some H2's for spares I thought I'd investigate the state of their spindles. One was very tight with no play AT ALL. On dismantling I discovered a very nice solution that was probably carried out by a professional in the 60's or 70's. The original spindles' worn surfaces were turned down on the lathe and in the resultant groove a some kind of flexible bush was fitted, I think it is leather or some other soft fibre. This fits nicely in the original carburettor housing. I think this is a very nice way to fix a caburettor, I know mine is now as airtight as it will ever get. See attached picture.
