MG MG Y Type - Fuel Tank Lining
| With advise from Paul, I have removed the fuel tank from YB1547. It has almost certainly never been out of the car, which spent most of its life in England and Canada. It also sat unused for over 20 years. Therefore I expected it would need a thorough restoration. When I removed the tank, the top side was virtually rust-free, and places where the paint wore off were clean silver metal! Inside the tank there are a few very small "gooey" spots but otherwise the tank looks brand new. I am shocked! Are these tanks made of such fine quality steel that they do not suffer rust and corrosion like other cars? MGA and MGB tanks will rust and flake apart very easily but this tank seems to be invulnerable. I have heard stories of Austin 7s being made of such pure steel that they survive unrestored in the UK with little to no rust. Could this be the same situation? And moving on to my specific question, is there any point in lining the inside of this tank? Will modern fuels react differently than the fuel this car ran on 30 or more years ago? |

| Good to hear that Steve. I wouldn't coat a good tank. I think a tank is coated to stop it rusting and to stop loose particles coming loose. It isn't rusting and so there won't be loose particles. I have heard of coating coming loose and clogging the fuelsystem...... |
