MG MG Y Type - Fuel Tank and Undervody Color
I see on the Y-Types site that the chassis and suspension is supposed to be satin black. I see no mention of the fuel tank. Is it safe to assume this should be the same? Also, is the underside of the spare tire compartment, above the fuel tank, also this color?

Hi Steve Yes - perfectly safe - I dont think too many will look there to check you didnt do it in pink!! :-) Seriously - no, chassis black is correct for both. Glad you got it out. A word of advice when refitting, you are bound to scratch it getting it back in place. You can minimize this by lightly taping an old cereal packet box (opened out) over all the metal bits you will contact as it goes back in, but make sure that where you tape it, you can still get to it to release it when you are done putting it the tank in place. Also, if you are fitting a new fuel sender, test the seal first by putting about 2 pints of gas in the tank and standing it on that end for a few hours with a catcher underneath. Last thing you want to do is find it leaks when you get it back in! Paul

Thanks for the tips. The sender appears original and works fine, so I plan to clean it up and continue using it. The only unfortunate aspect of this job is that someone decided to spray undercoat all over the underbody of the car at some point in its life. I've scraped a ton of it off, revealing lots of surface rust. But they couldn't get the undercoat between the tank and body, so they sprayed some sort of Waxoyl-like stuff in there. This area looks like brand new metal when the waxy stuff is removed. http://www.mgnuts.com/temp/ybtank1.jpg http://www.mgnuts.com/temp/ybtank2.jpg http://www.mgnuts.com/temp/ybtank3.jpg

This BBS doesn't allow 5 links in one post so here are the last two, of a piece of undercoat. One side clean and new-looking, one side covered in rust. Undercoat = bad! http://www.mgnuts.com/temp/ybtank4.jpg http://www.mgnuts.com/temp/ybtank5.jpg
