MG MG Y Type - Dynamo question

Sorry, silly question but I am having trouble with my battery discharging and not apparently charging via the dynamo (the ameter shows no charge and I dont have a functioning "no charge" warning light). From the workshop manual it appears that there should be two leads coming out of the dynamo and going to the regulator. I appear to have only one. There is another one coming from the regulator which judging by its colour should attach to the dynamo but is instead attached, as if redundant, to a fuel line by a cable tie. Is this the cause of my problem - when the garage was changing the points, ditributor and coil might they have disconnected this lead and forgot to reattach it? or could one lead be doing the job of two and this one now be redundant? Thanks.

One lead won't do the job.

As you will have read on the workshop manual there should be a yellow lead and a yellow and green lead. The yellow one is connected to the brushes and the yellow/green one goes to the (smaller?) field terminal that's more on the outside.

Marc,

Your Alternator should have two wires on it.

One is the FIELD wire and goes from F terminal on your Dynamo to the F screw on your control box and is Yellow with Green tracer.

The other wire is Yellow and goes from the D terminal on the Dynamo to the D Screw on the control box.

Also on the D Screw on the Control box is a Yellow that should go through to the Ignition Warning light on the dash. The other side of this light is a white wire that should go to the key switch. Attached to the same terminal as this white is a second white that goes to the fuse box.

Anything else is wrong so if you get this right things should start to come on again for you.

Yep, thanks - as I thought. The garage had disconnected the lead to the regulator terminal D and not reconnected. Did that this morning and she ran fine. Shes up at Silverstone now in the "60years of MG Racing" display main marquee if you want to pop in and have a look.

Hi Marc

If you can arrange for either the RAF or USAAF to fly me there they can collect me from our local airport after calling me on my cell phone - the FBI should be able to trace that no problem!

A Harrier GIII or GIV would be best because of the short runway length but inflight refueling should be possible. I could then touch down where the trader's village ought to be :-)

I would be delighted to come and see both you and your car ... so might see you there!

Meanwhile, though I cannot be there, I would encourage everyone to go along and meet you.

Best wishes for fine weather,

Paul
