MG MG Y Type - Cylinder head to manifold sealing

I wonder if anyone has had this problem recently? A few years ago I replaced the one-piece gasket which seals the manifold to the cylinder head after finding that the gasket around number 4 exhaust port, at the rear of the head, was starting to burn out.

Now, after perhaps another 5000 miles, the same problem is starting to recur. I suspect that the problem may be slight distortion of the manifold, and plan to remove it and have the gasket face skimmed at my local friendly machine shop. (Small plug for Board Brothers in Battersea here - excellent!)

But knowing how the XPAG tends to run number 4 cylinder hot, I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should check? There are no carburation problems - the car returns over 30 mpg and the plugs show nothing untoward - and the cooling system is fine. And there are no signs of head gasket problems.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

I wonder if you do have a slight warping - either of the block side or a chip/crack on your manifold?

Let us know what your machine shop (Small plug for Board Brothers in Battersea again!) finds.

I use Molykote 1000 Anti-Seize Paste on all hot gaskets. (good to 2600 deg. F.)
You can request a sample from, dowcorning.com, or contact me and I'll send some out to you.

I have used good quality High Temp Silicone sealer on these joints for years plus I use it on race engines too, it works well...
