MG MG Y Type - Cork seal for rear main bearing cap
Be careful if you order a cork seal for the rear main bearing on your XPAG engine. I had been checking ny engine over whilst my gearbox was away for reconditioning. I ordered a cork seal for the rear main bearing as it seemed good practice having removed the sump. Well, be aware that some of the replacement types available can be faulty - not quite the right size. There is possibly a batch out there that have been made to an incorrect size or are off another engine altogether. The photo shows the correct type seal (light one)together with a remanufactured one (dark one). The remanufactured one is 1mm wider and is a pig to fit and would not doubt have leaked had I forced it into the housing. The original tyupe seal fitted perfectly with no problems and has worked fine. As we know its a big job (engine out or at least sump off) to replace this seal and get it wrong and you will leak oil. Always keep the old seal for reference. Another point when fitting these seals is that the sump gasket ends go under the edge of the seal (the edges of the seal are stepped with the edge going into the seat of the housing it fits into)as described in the manual. Fit them correctly and they work fine. Fit the wrong type or fit it badly and you will leak oil! The moral is if the seal does not go easily into the housing it may have been made wrongly. The cork seal is meant to compress when the sump is on giving a good seal round the crankshaft.

Apologies for the typing errors in my message above. Here's another view of the two seals.

| I will add my AMEN to everything David has said above. As I am just about ready to add my rebuilt XPAG back into my (Canadian)YT (as opposed to my British one) I will actually be testing it on a bench rig before "droping" it back in so that I can mess with it again if it still leaks! Paul |
