MG MG Y Type - Carburetter needle

My YB seems to be running rich, despite having adjusted the carburetter mixture to its leanest setting. I suspect that the needle is probably worn. There is also a slow leak of fuel around the jet seals. So I intend to ovehaul the carburetter this winter. This will include a new needle and jet.

I have seen old articles about the use of alternative needles (and revised ignition timing) to allow for modern petrol. I was intending to fit an EF needle, which is the one originally specified for a weaker mixture. Does anyone have any ideas on the optimum needle for a YB?

The conventional wisdom and knowledge base on this is contained in Safety Fast June 1999 in an article by Peter Arnell. You can access this at http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccy/newsletter.shtml and scroll down to 1999.

Hope this helps you out.

Before you fit the jet check if it is really 0.09, mine was delivered as a 0.10 which caused me lot's of grieve.

The standard needle is the FI, the factory recommended weak needle is indeed the EF and the needle found by Peter Arnell is the DZ.

If you compare the three on the website below it is interesting to see how much the EF needle will lean out in the last steps, something you wouldn't want at full throttle? I think I'm going to try the DZ.

Using it is a bit fiddly, first select the 0.09" jet and then fill in the FI, EF and DZ.
