MG MG Y Type - Cabriolet bodywork

I am new to YT's, What is the difference between the cabriolet bodywork and a "regular" YT? This site claims this a cabriolet bodywork, one of nine, but it does not look any different then the one in my garage.

What are the difference in the 9 Swiss Vehicles?

Hi Jim

Firstly my abject apologies for not having spotted this thread earlier and coming back to you: I am surprised that no one else has either but any way, let us now correct that.

The link that you provided is incorrect. The ar featured is a normal MG YT of which there were more than 890 made we now believe. The NINE that are referred to here are actually nine MG Y chassis and drive trains that were sent to some specialist body builders like Warblaufen Reinbolt & Christe, Carrozzeria Castagna, Ramseier, Zagato and others. These were sent in early 1948 and the Y/T was not produced until by MG until August of the same year. These nine chassis were then given totally custom body work by the various styling houses and some of these are featured on our Interesting Ys - Special Bodied Ys on www.mgytypes.org.

I hope this answers your question, albeit belatedly.

Apologies again,

Paul

Paul Barrow

Hi there Paul & Jim, while researching the history of my 1937 MG VA Tourer, I discovered what was included in a "chassis only" MG export from Abingdon.

There was a lot more included than just the chassis - they included the following :-

chassis and all running gear
petrol tank
spare wheel
number plates
instrument panel
switches and all electrical equipment
unpainted wings
running boards
front fairing
bonnet
propshaft tunnel
rear footwells
and bumpers

Now this was the case in 1937 - so I wonder if the list was similar in 1947 with the Y-Type "chassis only" exports to Switzerland.

From the photos I have seen of the surviving Cabriolet cars - it appears to me the list was the same.

We need a current owner of one of these special cars to confirm my thoughts ?.
