MG MG Y Type - Bumpers

I thought that the bumper for the MG TD could by usedon the Y. I have two Bumper Face Bars, TD bumper supports, and two old Y bumpers. Question: Is it possible to use the rear TD bumper Face Bar, and if so what is needed to mount it on a YT or a YA?

Mel,

Never having done it, but knowing the similarity of TD bumpers to Ys (no folks they are not the same - see later) they should theoretically still fit to the bumper irons with no seriously special modification I guess.

The difference between Y and non-Y bumper blades are that the non-Y ones are the same top edge and bottom edge. Y ones by comparison have a longer top edge than non-Y ones, but the same short bottom edge. There, if you didnt know it, you do now ... you too can be a concourse judge (or just a sad case!!).

If any one has done this expediant refit (real Y ones are few and far between, even on Ys that are being broken but you can strike lucky still), perphaps you can confirm or deny my speculation and help Mel out please.

Good luck Mel,

Yes TD overriders can be used on Y bumper bars. Used them for years until I finally found the correct Y type overriders. As I recall the bars are essentially the same except that the end on the Y type has more of a point. The same overriders for the Y are also used on the TC EXU and that is where I got mine from. Terry

I have the Y bumper and the TD bumper. The Y bumper is actually about 1/8" thinner then the TD bumper. The TD overrider will kind of fit on the Y bumper, but the Y overrider does not fit well on the TD overrider.

What I really need to know is what bumper irons are needed to mount a TD bumper on a Y?

I have a YA and a YB, the bumper irons on the YB worked with no modification but the YA irons needed lengthening by about 1 inch.
