MG MG Y Type - Brake master cylinder memories...
| I have been investigation a leaking rear brake cylinder on my YB and was looking through my notes from yesteryear....back in 1982 I replaced the master cylinder (Lockheed part no 88187) with a replacement item then available in the then Lockheed catalogue as part no 88702). This was described as a direct replacement for the previous one which was 'now' (then) out of production (well in 1982). The new master cylinder fitted perfectly except that in order to get the required 'free play' of 1/2 inch at the pedal I had to shorten the original push rod a little bit. The master cylinder has been fine since as has the braking although various wheel cylinders have been replaced over the years. It just struck me that if you have or had one of these later type master cylinders you may have problems with the push rod length. Just though I would mention this in case any one else has come acrosss this. By the way is it advisable to replace both rear cylinders rather than try new seals these days? |
