MG MG Y Type - Brake master cylinder

Hi all.
Has anybody found an easy method of replacing the cotter pin through the master cylinder push-rod and the bottom of the brake pedal.

I have just rebuilt the M/Cyl today and eventually had to almost strip the car to get inside the pedal box from inside the car.
Any tips/experiences?

Having goodground clearance is the key - either working in a pit or on a ramp it is much easier as at least you can look square into the appature.

From a lighting stand point though, yes front seat out, carpet back gear lever knob & lock nut off, remove gearbox cover, remove front floor board and you are there.

It is a fiddley job, but made much easier if the clutch is disconnected first so that you can push its pedal out of the way too. Also helps if your bolts holding the cover on are not rusted into place either.

In the trade it is called a 'grazed knuckle experience' i.e. it is very tight! Persistance I found the key. When at first I didnt succeed - retreat and have another go later.

Did mine some years ago, ( wrote a 'help-sheet' for the Y register from it, Jack Murray has them,) and got access from under the car with little difficulty. I renewed the pedal shaft as well, and found it is NOT the same as that on the TD. The brake pedal light switch on my car is a motorcycle type, pulled by a wire from inside the 'box.

Thanks Paul and Neil.
Job now done. I found that the easiest way is to remove the drivers side front floorboard which then gives relatively easy access to the pedal box from the top. Then with a long-nose pair of pliers, it is simple to insert the clevis pin, wedge it in position with a suitable piece of thin wood, then get underneath and insert the split pin. Easy when you know how.

Found some ware on the shaft, so that will now go on my "jobs to do list".Looks like your notes Neil will come in handy.

At best it is a fiddly little job which was greatly eased for me when I was recently doing this on my YT restoration as there was no gearbox or floorboards in so I was able to sit on the workshop floor where the gearbox should be to do it - an option Neil probably doesnot cover in his notes - remove engine and gear box too!! :-)

Well done Keith,
