MG MG Y Type - Best material heat shield?
| I've made a heatshield for my Y from a piece of aluminium that was littering the garage. I also have some stainless steel of which I could make another. I have two questions: - Is the shield in the picture large enough? - Which of the two materials would be better? For both I can think of something: aluminium: conducts heat very well, thus acting as large cooling fin on the carburettors' outlet, plus it would channel the hottest air from the exhaust away from the float chamber. stainless steel: doesn't conduct heat very well, thus radiation may be less and it won't lead the heat to the carburettor? Comments please?

Aluminum is a better heat conductor than Stainless Steel I believe - strange that they make double glazing frames from it ... but that is another story!! The heat shield as outlined in the MGCC Y Register Datasheet 1 is about twice the size of yours and has two plates on it for maximum heat disipation. Paul

Willem, My old Rover P4 had an alu heat shield fitted as standard. It was about 6" x 4" as far as I can remember. I never had any trouble with vapour locks - single SU carb & twin fuel pumps, but then Rover put the petrol pumps in the coolest place they could find - the boot! Incidently, from your photos, the black flex hose which appears to be from the inlet manifold, I assume is for a brake servo. If I am right may I ask what type you have used, because when I get round to doing the brakes on my YA I want to fit a servo, but am not sure which would be a suitable unit. Regards, TonyK

Hi Tony, The black hose is for the Redex "Car Care Robot" aka a vacuum gauge. It's a bit oversized so I have fitted a restrictor, but I'm still after the original adjustable Redex restrictor.... A suitable brake servo could be: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-RH5272

Thank you for that, Willem. Will keep Rimmer Bros in mind. Tony K
