MG MG Y Type - Banging over bumps problem
My YB is having problems with the rear suspension. When I go over a bump such as a sleeping policeman / road hump I get a sharp bang from the rear. It's not the rear end banging on the chassis as sometimes happens due to rusting of the body mounts as this area has long been repaired. It feels like the axle is hitting the chassis at the back. I did put on a 'reconditioned' pair of rear springs (stupidly throwing the old pair away!)but by that I mean I cleaned them and put in new rubber pads. The car leans a bit to one side abut the shock absorbers seem to work OK. I presume therefore that its a weak rear spring or similar? Any one know of a way of confirming what is going on as I am sure this is a fault that is common to other Ys.

Hi david, If you are unsure of the condition of the 'Silentblock' bushings in the spring eyes, tap (bash) on the spring with a dead blow hammer near to the rear of the eye and listen for metal-to-metal contact.

I had a similar noise when going over bumps etc and it turned out to be a rear shocker link bush. Looked OK but "knocked" under load.

Thanks for the comments - I did replace the silentbloc bushes and rubber bushes when I put the springs back but I must check the shock absorber rubber bush in the link as that's not been looked at - having had the shocks reconditioned in 1982(seems like yesterday) I must get round to checking that - will report on the findings.
