MG MG Y Type - an MG Experience by Dick Jacobs - on eBay

A copy of the out of print book 'an MG experience' by Dick Jacobs is currently on eBay in VGC http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270097996806&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:UK:1.

This book is an interesting one charting the racing career of one of the privateers turned professional race team managers. It includes a chapter on the race car special Dick built on a YA chassis, and two chapters covering his time in racing a YB. In the 82 photos in this book I spotted 6 Ys - did I miss any? Book is now out of print and only available through second hand dealers and eBay. Compulsive reading written in an easy going, fast moving pace with good humour. An enjoyable read.

I have no interest in the sale, nor do I know the seller.

Enjoy,

Paul

I endorse Paul's review of this book - it is an excellent read.

The last paragraph in the book is the saddest part of the Dick Jacobs story.

I have plans to convert the rusty Y in my front yard into a replica of SHK 7 !. Apart from Dick's book, I have been unable to find any more information or photo's of SHK 7. Can anyone help me ?.

Tony Slattery

Tony - only just seen your thread. I photographed SHK 7 and wrote an article on it in one of the Dick Knudson MG Year Books - 1974 I think. I knew the owner then in London and he had used it for European holidays and later restored it to original condition. The plumbning for the supercharger is unique with the blower on the other side from usual and an induction pipe running around the front of the block to the inlet mainfold.

I'll track it down the book in my library and copy it for you. The car went to USA as far as I know and was in a collection of 40-50 MGs but I think I saw somewhere that the collection was later sold off. An enquiry through the New England MG T Register might locate it if the current owner or a past owner listed it on their register. I have some other photos of it somewhere that were not used in the article. I'll look for those too.

Have you contacted anyone in the MGCC T Register UK to see if they have data on file? They have a contact person for queries on "specials". A story probably appeared in Safety Fast at some point but that may be harder to track down.

Incidentally the publishers of Jacobs' book asked me to redraft his manuscript into a printable format and caption the pix which I did in mid '75 and finished the job just prior to returning to Oz. In a case of 'out of sight, out of mind' they never paid me the 100 pounds promised on publication. My job was 'ghosting' as they say in the book trade and as such they must have thought I did not need crediting in the book with what was quite a mammoth task - that's gratitude for you!! I was sore at the time but it's all water under the bridge now. Cheers Rob
