MG MG Y Type - Alternate Parts: Generator

Theoretically speaking, if an unscrupulous Y owner would want to install a TD generator (including the TD generator fan and pulley) bought from Moss in a Y, would this be a simple straightforward fit?

The C39 Dynamo (Generator) was fitted to both the TD and the Y type so there should be no problems.

Earlier Y Types used the C45 Dynamo which was a much larger unit. The changeover from C45s to C39s took place in late 1949. The main question is did you have a C45 originally or a C39? The pulley fitted to the Y Type had a rounded end (both C45s and C39s), whereas the one fitted to the TD did not, however the TD Pulley will work fine on either car.

It is probable that if you have a new dynamo it will be a C40 as opposed to a C39, the main difference is the ‘oiler’ and the fact that a C40 does not have a removable ‘band’ to get to the brushes. It is normal to ensure that the Regulator matches the dynamo and the pairing for a C39 is a RF95/2

Hope this helps.

Maybe that Y owner could gain scrupulousness by using the Y fan and pulley from his old generator?

I broke a blade on an original fan one time and ordered a new one up. Like everything else these days is was clearly a "cheaper" imitation and was much less substantial than the original. Do not be surprised at either the price or the look and feel of the new one! I wish I had had the old one TIG welded!
