MG MG Y Type - air cleaner noise
The air cleaner on my 1950 y type makes a considerable noise, which is like a fairly deep resonance, becoming unpleasant at 50 mph and over. it seems to be getting worse, anyone got an idea to reduce this problem ?. Harry.

On the rougher roads of Australia in the 1950's it was common for Y-Type oil bath air cleaners to crack internally and gradually fall apart. The design of the bottom section of the oil bath aircleaner is to also dampen the induction noise of the XPAG. Try driving your Y without the std Air cleaner and you will be shocked with the noise level. Have a look at the underside of your air-cleaner and see if there are any cracks. Not an easy fix I'm afraid. All of the above assumes you have an oil bath cleaner - I have no experience/advice with "home market" air cleaners.

Harry When was the last time it was cleaned per the Operation Manual in parrafin (aka kerosene over here)? Can you define "considerable noise"? Is it a whine, or a clonking? If it is a whine it could probably be some debris that is trapped in the air cleaner, or the pipe, or it may have got down to the carburettor now and it may be setting up a whine as it vibrates with the air being sucked over it. Remove the air cleaner, take it apart and give it a good clean, remove the pipe and check it is clear and that there is nothing obstructing either it or the carburettor butterfly. Paul

Harry, I had a rattling noise from my air cleaner, which I traced to a loose end mounting bolt. Unfortunately mine was seized and just turned in the filter, but I stopped the rattle by using a black cable tie. Hope this helps Roy

Thank you collectively for your comments which are appreciated. The air cleaner is the "home market" type without oil bath. The noise is not mechanical (not a rattle or vibration) but is more of a roar, induction noise probably describes it best, it also resonates unplesantly. I will dismantle, clean in paraffin this weekend, and check again for cracks or damage, though it seemed intact at last examination. The noise became apparent after the last top end tune up ( tappet adjustment, renewal of HT leads, points replacement and ignition timing adjustment). The car is running really well, just noisy !. I will post results of actions. Thanks again for suggestions. Harry.
