MG MG Y Type - A wiring puzzle part 2
| While on the subject of earth contact corrosion I have found that generous sized earth wires should be run to all lights, motors etc, and these should be terminated at a common stud on the scuttle. I am aware that this may offend the purists, but manufactures do sometimes get it wrong. I heard that some years ago a car manufacturer was puzzled by a number of differential failures in a new model. A young engineer suggested that the earth return from the rear lights was tracking to the gearbox strap via the rear axel then down the prop shaft, and this was causing erosion between the gear teeth. The problem was soon corrected. The earth return should not wander around the chassis looking for its own way home, since it is bound to get up to mischief! |

| Bryan - "The earth return should not wander around the chassis looking for its own way home, since it is bound to get up to mischief!" In modern day electronics systems, that is known as a ground loop and systems are designed with a single point earth returns to prevent just such things (along with signal degradation). Your suggestion of individual earth wires, all terminating at one location is right on. Cheers - Dave |
