MG MG Y Type - A recommendation

A few weeks ago I took Y5100 over to Jason Waller at Classic and Sports Cars in Leading Roding, Essex as they were the people who reconditioned the engine nearly three years ago.

They chemically flushed the radiator and adjusted the tappets and the timing and generally gave it the “once over”. Just after telling me that it was ready to be collected the observant lads noticed a water leak from the rear of my engine. Unfortunately, there was no way to locate or, indeed, fix the leak without completely removing the engine.

So they took out the engine and installed it in a test rig, located the leak and replaced the faulty gasket on the rear inspection panel by the battery box then had to re-install the engine and make sure it was all just as it should be. When they were sure all was OK Jason called me again and I collected the car.

I drove it around 60 miles from Essex up to the winter storage near Milton Keynes and was extremely impressed with the way it was now running.

Trolling along the dual-lane roads at 60mph was no problem and there was not a sign of the radiator boiling and after a fairly brisk run of that length there was nothing in the radiator overflow bottle that I had installed back in May. Those of you who know this car and the overheating problems that have dogged me for the time I have owned it will know what a triumph this is. (Admittedly it was a cold foggy day, but still ...)

The lads at Classic and Sports Cars clearly know their stuff and I recommend them highly.

Murray,
The XPAG photos look a good job.

Their web site is good too, nice and clear and used the same Content Management System as the new MGCC Y Register site interestingly.

Hi Murrray

I too used Classic and Sports Cars when I had the XPAW engine in my TA rebuilt. They did an excellent job and it is running well over 3 years later. They were of course owned by Peter Edney has Jason Waller (?) taken it over - there is no mention of PE anywhere on the site.

My only comment at the time of getting the car back was the time taken and the promises regarding completion not being met. I took the car in at the beginning of December 2006 and got it back at the end of March 2007. I did have to have a total engine rebuild as the oil leak at the back of the crankcase was just the tip of the iceberg! A couple of e-mails and some pics made me realise that I had no option but to bite the bullet and have the work done. It wasn't cheap but eventually turned out well.

Sincerely

My understanding is that Classic and Sports Cars is owned and run by Jason Waller while Peter Edney has retained the MG parts business.

Time wise I was happy as I said there was no deadline so no promises were broken :)

Whilst the photos of the workshop on their website are under ideal conditions, it looks almost as good in reality when the guys are actually working on cars - most impressive.
