MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Which Gearbox
| Can any tell me if there is a difference between the gearboxes fitted to 1098cc CC and CG engines. If so how can you tell without stripping down. Also what is the best way to assess the condition of gearboxes when not in the car, I have one that is painted green and one unpainted does this have any bearing on the age? Is there an easy way of inspecting without totally stripping the gearbox. Thanks for any advice. |

| There were a number of different gearboxes fitted to Spridgets and they may also have been swapped over the years. The date of manufacture is often stamped onto the lefthand side of the casing, but that will only really tell you how old the casing is, as it could have been rebuilt with different gearsets in the 40+ years since it was originally built. The part number stamped into the first motion shaft is the best indicator as to which gearbox you have. There are ways of guestimating the condition through the side cover without dismantling. Where in West Mids are you? |

| Thanks Dave. I'll have a look and see what numbers I can see. I am near Dudley. |

| one quick check for one of the changes is whether there are ribs on the outside of the case until 12/'63, smooth case from 1/'64, ribbed case, improved synchro rings from 4/'64, helical angle changed (shallower angle) but, like Dave pointed out, rebuilt units will most likely have later gear sets in them (the earlier, weak synchro, an the larger helical angle gears are not available new).
