MG Midget and Sprite Technical - When shocks go bad!

Look what my mechanic discovered! I really should examine my car more often and more thoroughly (doh!).
What would cause this? The shocks are less than 6 months old (reconditioned).

Waht would cause this?

Not uncommon on this kind of suspension but safe to say that poor reconditioning is a factor.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Most recon shocks are rubbish (moss mgoc etc) that is why the FL kit is so attractive (though not without faults)

Generaly you get what you pay for....
Cheap rebuilds = rubish
Expensive shocks = posible good work (can still be rubbish though)

Afaik Peter May has good ones as does Peter Caldwell in the US non that I know on your continent
Onno Könemann

Tell him to pop it back in with a spot of superglue on the shaft.

Is that pivot pin bent? Looks like it's been protruding a while, given the visible rusty surface buildup.

I just had the same failure (@~15 K miles).. Installed the Caldwell units, they shipped quick and took the knackered unit as core. Getting them shipped Down Under might be a bit $$, but maybe less expensive than swapping them out every 6 months?

FWIW: Mine developed an annoying squeak where the lever arm protrusion meant for the bump stop instead rubbed against the bump stop during normal up/down travel. Wouldn't squeak at all while braking or in a turn. Did yours do similar?

I should feel lucky I got ~15 K miles from mine. Yours didn't even have the decency to stick around long enough to build up a respectable patina of Standard British Lubrication.

Richard Reeves

Mine did not squeak at all. I heard a "clunk" on about 3 occasions since fitting (ie last 5 months) and I drive mine every day.
I have asked the mechanic to investigate the cause and will report back. No point installing a replacement if it's going to happen again.
