MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Update on 8° cam advance

Hi, I just thought I would post an update to my cam timing story.

For those who hadn't read the original post my Cam timing was 8° retarded (it had been fitted by lining up the dots), I purchased an offset key to bring it in line with the manufacturers spec of 107° ATDC.

The engine was refitted at the weekend along with a reconditioned gearbox (A big thumbs up to Ken at Klassik Transmissions in Wolverhampton!!) and although I still need to fettle with the mixture a bit my first impressions are that it seems to be quicker and certainly smoother, although that could be the lack of gearbox noise!

It revs a lot more freely now and on a couple of occasions in 2nd gear I found myself at 6000 rpm which would have been like pulling teeth previously.

It remains to be seem if the engine develops any more power but I will be in contact with Peter Burgess to arrange a session to get everything set up right.

All in all the engine runs so much nicer and smoother than before so I'm not really fussed if the bhp remains the same.

I have one question though:

I am currently running an RC40 single box system and am wondering if I will benefit from swapping it for a Maniflow one. I will need to make this decision prior to the RR set up.

Vizard says the RC40 is good for engines up to 130bhp... beyond that, you begin to lose power.

Hi Anthony, my engine is good for 80-85bhp at the flywheel so there doesnt seem much reason to change.
Is the Maniflow any louder/quieter than the RC40? I know that engine spec does play its part but generally speaking?

I though the RC-40 reasonably quiet, when new. I've no experience re Maniflow.

If you're happy with RC-40, stick with it.

Maniflow is slightley louder than the rc40.
