MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Trim Panels
I am fitting some new trim panels to the car but they are a little oversized. Does anybody know the best way of sanding the backing card to get them to fit properly?

Hi Rob. I had a similar problem with my door cards. I couldn't get the door to fit right withe new seals, so I un-picked the bottom staples that hold the vinyl to the hard board and cut a thin strip with a pad saw (hacksaw blade in a handle)off the bottom of the card then re-attached the vinyl with a staple gun. not the office type, but one of those big chrome things that upholsterers use. Worked fine, so good in fact that I made a full set of footwell panels for the car. The door cards and trim backing panels are hardboard and can get a bit ragged if you try to sand them. Bernie.

had both of the door panels off of my car yesturday and today it would seem the passenger door is a later door but behind the panel was damp and mouldy and yet the drivers door which is in worse condition is fine. must of been the weather at oulton park but seems easy enough to do the same as you mentioned just unstaple the vinyl copy the shape and restaple it. i wondered why the back part of it had used a thin piece of metal though but guess its down to the fact its likely to get wetter.

Dan. You'll notice that the metal panel is concave. This was done to try and give back a little of the elbow room that was lost when wind up windows took the space where the door pockets had been on the mk1 and 2 Sprites. It's done in metal to keep the shape as hardboard would distort. You can make a membrane to keep the damp at bay from plastic. Cut to shape and tape it in place between the door card and the door. I've seen black bin bags used, but as they are supposed to be bio-degradable they might not be such a good idea as they will start to break up eventually. Bernie.
