MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Synchro face coating....
My turn to ask a question..... There is a coating on the synchro faces of 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears in the rib case gearbox. Twice recently, I have come across perfectly good gears but with this coating either damaged or missing. Does anyone know what the coating is and if anyone has had any success in replacing it.... Thanks in anticipation... Mark. I'll try to put a picture up later...

Can't tell you exactly what it is, but it is a flame or plasma sprayed alloy, probably moly based. Industrial machine shops or coating people should be able to figure it out; it's a standard process in production. Same process is used to build up bearing surfaces and apply ceramic coatings. I have seen equipment that analyzes the coating to determine the alloy. If you find out, let me know, because I have some 1100/1300 gears that could use help! FRM

FRM. It's got to be a process that is applied after the main gear making process, so I'm sure it can be done again. I will no doubt get some other replies from the BBS's regular and more knowledgeable folk... (some more than others... lol). I'll call a friend in the UK this evening too, see if he can help.. Mark.

Hi Mark, If you post a photo, I know a man who will definitely know the answer. He designs gearboxes for a living and lectured my transmission course at Uni. If only I'd listened more at the time, I might be able to give you an anwser =] C
