MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Springs rubbing on Rear Hubs
Hi Guys I have Frontline double bearing hubs fitted, I have repositioned the lower spring to stop it rubbing but have the problem the top spring is also rubbing. I have broken the top spring once and having just taken the rear hub back off only after 50 miles find the hub has worm the spring already down to half its thickness. Does anyone else haev this problem and how do I go about stopping the problem or do I just go to a disc conversion Thanks Michael

I would ask the supplier, it's their responsibility to provide a product that works, which includes telling you how to fit it, with any other necessary mods.

Hi, I used to run these on a race sprite a few years ago. Can't remember where I got them - the US I think, but not Frontline, so they might have changed a bit since. I found the same issue with the springs, and the only cure was to re-drill the brake shoe to move the bottom spring away from the hub. As far as I remember I don't recall ever having an issue with the top spring. The other (more serious) issue I had was due to the fact that the oil seal on the double bearing hub runs in a different place on the axle casing to the original. If the surface of the casing is at all scruffy, as it almost certainly will be, the seals will be scrap in short order and leak like sieves. The only cure I found was to sleeve the axle casing with a very expensive special sleeve - SKF speedi-sleeve - about £100 each last time I checked. Needless to say I went back to the original hub which worked perfectly well with 185mm Yokohamas and approx 125bhp at the wheels. Hope that is of use to someone.

It ought to be possible to get a Speedy Sleeve for a lot less than £100. In fact you ought to be able to get a pair for a lot less than that. If you can't get a pair for less than £40 - £60 in the UK I bet someone can stateside and airmail them to the UK with change left over.
