MG Midget and Sprite Technical - spring pan bolts
Hi all, Anyone know where you get the bolts for the front spring pan? I am planning on lowering the front by 1/2 inch at the spring pan so will need longer than standard! Tim
T Dafforn
You only need 1/4 inch lower at the pan to have 1/2 inch at wheels... A
Anthony Cutler
I was thinking 1inch at the wheels to match the lowering blocks on the rear. I guess my question should have included bolt dimensions and grade. Tim
T Dafforn
Don't know about over on your side, but in the US most of our hardware stores carry grade 8 bolts in the appropriate lengths. IIRC they should be 5/16" X 24 and about 2" long to fit a 1/2" spacer.

Unfortunately in the UK most general hardware stores only sell metric sizes made of putty. Proper nuts and bolts are only available from specialists which for me means mail order. And that for the country that once led the world in engineering manufacture !

Try this guy http://www.wrightsautosupplies.co.uk/ carries all sorts of fixings + a nice helpfull chap to boot.
R Fowler
Thanks. What. I was meaning was that suppliers like that used to be in every town in the country. Now it is just these specialist firms.

Interestingly almost all the blots & set screws that some from Screwfix have 8.8 stamped on the head, which I think technically means that they're grade 8. They don't state it in the catalogue but a trip to a trade counter would confirm. -Craig

Craig The designation 8.8 is for metric fasteners and is not the same as grade 8 which AFAIK applies to inch fasteners only. For confusion a grade 8 bolt is about equivalent to a metric 12.9 and a grade 5 bolt is about equivalent to a 8.8 . For the spring pan bolts I would expect a grade 5 would be fine. Anyone now what the original specification was?.

I recommend this guy. He knows his onions when it comes to nuts and bolts. http://www.ahc-camberley.co.uk/catalog/index.php Just don't gem him started on the difference between a bolt and a set screw!
TonyJH
Thanks for the clarification, David, think I understand that now. -C

That is my bit of (maybe incorrect) trivia from another thread. Bolt has a straight section of shank, set screw has threads all the way along! Simples! Malcolm
