MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Spoked wheels

Help..I have to adjust the nearside kingpin to pass the UK MOT and I cannot for the life of me get the hub off the wheel to remove it..Ive WD'd it to oblivion...put the attachment on jumped on it,pulled hammerred..taken a sledgehammer in the hope to actually move the bloody thing..and still it wont budge....the hub loosens anticlockwise as the arrow shows...never done this before..so HELP ME...How do I get this thing OFF!! GRRRRR

Yes you are correct the nearside hubs are normal threaded and do indeed undo anticlockwise.

I thought for a moment that perhaps someone had installed the hubs in the wrong side at sometime and you would then need to hit it clockwise to remove it. This has happened a number of times over the years. However if you can see the undo arrow on the "spinner" pointing anti clockwise then you would think the hubs are installed correctly.

How big is the hammer you are using? These sometimes need a heavy blow. You may nee to twat it with a FBH.

WD40 isn't a great penetrating oil, try some Kroil or such. One method that's worked for many people is to loosen the knock off a bit but still leave it attached by at least a couple of turns and then drive the car in a tight circle to the side you want to remove. In many cases the wheel will pop free due to the side loadings but not come off because of the knock off. Go slow and check every couple of circuits. Easier to do with someone else to check on the progress rather than you having to get out of the car.

Hmmm is it the spinner that wont come off or is it the wheel?
I assumed it was the spinner.

WD40 isn't a penetrating oil at all its a WATER DISPERSANT.

I had a problem with my MGB when I first had it, where I couldn't get one of the spinners undone.

It eventually came undone when we used an old table leg resting on the spinner and beat the hell out of it with a BFH.

With everything properly greased and a suitable lead hammer, they come undone easily...even after 11 years +.

Kroil is great so was/is? Rapideze but both are hard to find

try PlusGas as it's more freely available, aplly and leave as long as possible, overnight or at least a mug of tea - if that doesn't repeat application and delay - that should do it with the help of the 'universal spanner'

I use a product in Australia called Inox. As a penetrating oil, it is just awesome.. unbelievable in fact. In the UK, I would use Duck Oil or Plus Gas but they pale into insignificance compared to Inox. However, I've never seen it in the UK.

As for the wheel / spinner, persistance is the only way. It WILL come off eventually.......

Good luck,

Mark.

I told you that you'd get a swift response here, Ross!

My understanding was from talking to Ross last night was that it was a non-eared spinner that was stuck.

Any luck yet?

Job done ladies and gents...fiver says they (MOT-ers) couldnt get tyre off for lack of tool to remove...kingpins done, and if anything, the hubnut might demand a little tightening, but Ive not got the socket for that...

Tim this place is ace,and a shedload of hassle would have been sorted if I'd have been on here sooner...!!
