MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Smoking from around manifolds
Just had to put a 'new' engine in my 1500 as my old one spat the oil out and killed my bearings. The new engine needed my old head putting back on (after I gave it a quick recon, valves cleaned, re-lapped etc) and it's had obviously new gaskets where needed. I started it up, got great oil pressure, started to bleed the cooling system and noticed a kind of white smoke coming from around the rear of the manifolds area (it was coming from somewhere near the 3/4 inlet, but underneath where I couldn't quite see). I thought it may just be oil and other stuff burning off the engine from the instalation/rebuild and maybe the new gaskets settling in, but as it went on and got slightly worse, I got paranoid and turned the engine off (was running maybe 5 mins max). It didn't smell like burning oil, just like something burning, but there's nothing down there to burn...is there? Ideas?

Sounds like it was just a bit of crap from mounting it no worry's as long as you see no leaks and vitals are fine (temp/oilpressure)

Might it be the rear water hose connection to the heated manifold - maybe just weeping and running down onto the hot exhaust manifold enough to create a bit of steam ?

Ive had a very small stream of water coming from one of the core plugs and hitting the manifold. This only happened once the engine got warm. Carl

Thankfully it wasn't any of that, it was just collected oil smoking from the lower end of the exhaust downpipe (my previous engine had liberally coated this area...) Now I just have a clattering to find and cure (sounds like something in the valve train). Being back on the road is great and having oil pressure is greater!
