MG Midget and Sprite Technical - running like a bag of spanners

Just changed the heat shield on my 1500 all back together except now engine runs awfully revs erratic and sounds awfull. Could this be an air leak

Did you put the block gaskets in backwards....if so you covered up rhe vent holes

Get it running and spray down with carb cleaner/wd40 ...listen for the engine speed increase

I've got the US carb setup on mine, but just a guess here... did you get the gasket between the carbs and filters on upside-down? If I remember right, there's a cutout in the filter that prevents blocking the damper chamber air vent. Cover that, and you've got problems...

Maybe a shot in the dark, that, but still.

I will check when on my lunch to see if I have put the gaskets on right. I cant get it running properly because the revs shoot straight up to redline then the engine either cuts out or I turn it off to avoid damage!

Did you put the throttle springs on the right way, so the butterflies are normally held shut?

As far as I know I did the throttle spring is on thought it could only go on one way? If some one has a pic that would help.

Ok just checked all gaskets are in place as they should be? Still puzzled by the throttle springs when I lift the throttle you can here the butterfly valves open and when I let go they slam shut?

Well what do you know took the carbs off last night placed them back on checking everything as I went along started it up and running fine! Still idles a little fast 1200 when warm but not tuned the carbs properly so I am happy. Hopefully that everything sorted now for a happy summer.
