MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replacing Engine Mounts
Am I right in thinking that to change the engine mounts it is as simple as putting a block of wood under the oil pan and jacking the engine up undo mounts and replace?
C Carter
Nope, you forgot about the cursing and blood letting. Actually, it is not a bad job on the earlier cars. It is a bit more tedious on the 1500 models.

Generally you are correct but I suggest you undo the engine mount on the right side at the engine and the whole mounting bracket on the left at the bodyshell (otherwise you will never get them off!). There was a thread on this recently - check the BB or the archives.

Just to add a thought Remove the 4 bolts that hold the transmission as well as the exhauste pipe Are you replacing the rubber blocks or the entire mount. There are certianly worse jobs.... and can do this in a saterday with the basic tools. But i would take trevors advise and get a QT or 2 of blood transfusion on standby.... and a couple of sqft of skin graph. Yeah ...its really that bad... esp with sausage link fingers Prop

I wouldn't bother with the gearbox bolts, but the exhaust will more than likely need to be separated.

It is a 1500 so hope fully it wont be too bad. I am only replacing the rubber blocks so I just need to undo one bolt then jack the engine up high enough to clear these bolts and replace rubbers if possible I would like to do this without touching the gear box mounts but will separate the exhaust?

I did this job on a USA 1500 last weekend....was going to post a pic of my hands and arms all cut to pieces....lol....buy some band aids and use surgical gloves as the crud down there is tough to remove from your hands. You definately have to undo the exhaust either from the manifold to downpipe or take the entire manifold off. That will give you enough clearance. Because the steering is on the left on the USa model the steering rod passes right by the left mount making it difficult to remove the bolt to the engine. I undid the two bolts to the chassis and all three on the right sidwe mount then jacked the engine up which gave enough clearance to get the center bolt out. Installation was just a reverse of this sequence. You have to use to jack to line things up. It's not too tough, just take your time and keep your fingers out of any gaps when the jack is holding the engine. Good luck !
