MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Removing an outer sill

Hi all,
I have checked the archives but can't find this answer anywhere.
I need to replace an outer sill in my mk III as there is a hole in the drivers side sill ( put there by an errant scaffold pole so I'm told) .
I assume simply steel patching the hole will be failed at MOT time?
looking in the hole, there does not seem to be any mega rust etc as I understand the sills ( inner & outer ) were done about 6-7 years ago.
Question is this- whats the best way of getting the outer sill off ? angle grinder with a cutting disk or chisel & butchering it off??
When installing the new sill, should I do zillions of spot welds & then seam weld or have i got to seam weld only?
cheers colin

I would use any tool that was required.

Generally a drill to free off the spot welds and a grinder to smooth things out and a cutting disk to cut through where you may want to make a joint.

Refixing is a matter of if the original is spot welded then spot welding would be sufficient however if you have cut a panel to let in some metal then that would require a seam weld. If you do not want to spot weld then seam welding is acceptable also.

Finally a hole in a sill can be repaired by seam welding a patch over the hole or if you want let the metal in to seam up the hole. This will pass MOT assuming the rest of the area is solid.

How did a scaffold pole punch a hole in the sill (and not bend anything else)?!

MOT allows patches as long as it is seem welded all the way round. If you grind it flat, skim it with filler and paint it the MOT man won't notice it anyway! :-)

As above, if it is sound apart from the hole, weld a piece into it.

they say there's no such thing as a dumb question - your 'scaffold pole hole' isn't the jacking point is it?
