MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Brakes
Hi, After giving the car a once over for the MOT, I have realised that the rear brake shoes appear to be braking on the inside edge of the shoe only and that the car will sometimes slightly roll with the hand brake applied. Would this be a shoe or drum problem? The shoes a new only covering a few hundred miles. The drums appear fairly new but have been on the car at least 5 years covering a few thousand miles. Any help appreciated. Thanks Kevin

The shoes should self align to the inner drum surface when the slave cylinder operates, as they are not rigidly held within the drum. One edge of the shoe may make initial contact before the rest of the friction surface, but this shouldn't be a problem. They will need to bed in for some miles before being fully effective. It sounds to me that the brakes need to be adjusted, using the backplate adjuster, and then adjust the handbrake free play by means of the handbrake cable adjuster, as per the manual.

when in doubt, you can have the drums turned (not a bad idea when fitting new shoes anyway) by your local auto parts store
