MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Prop shaft

Hi once again,
Whilst changing the worn UJ on the gearbox end of my prop shaft I notice that one of the yokes had cracked and a small spot of weld (about 4mm diameter)holding it together. The cup in that yoke was not a tight fit and needed a little threadlock to stop it from moving when the uj was flexed. I put it all back together as I needed to use the car but now I think it is time to fix it properly as it shakes the fillings out of your teeth at 62mph. I presume this is because it is out of balance due to the blob of weld.
Does anyone have a spare prop shaft around they would like to sell me? It is a 1275 1972 round wheel arch.
Thanks
Dave

Dave,
Vibration at 62MPH is generally a problem with the balance of the front wheels. If you are still running the original disk wheels (or wires, for that matter), it can be challenging to find someone competent to balance them properly. Lots of stuff in the archives, but the basic issue is that modern balancing machines assume that the hole in the center is true. This is not necessarily the case with RO-Styles. Have them checked, and tell the balancer that he needs to check for runout at the rim when he spins them out; if the runout is excessive, the machine will not get them properly balanced. Some machines have adapters so that they can use the lug holes of the rim as the reference, others just take a few tries to get it properly centered. Look for the oldest guy in the shop and splain things at him, he will probably understand lug-centric.

If you do need a good wheel shop and are prepared to travel to Peterborough I can give you the name of one who is fantastic

David,
The front wheels (wires) are new and have been balanced correctly. The vibration was there before I changed the wheels.
I will email max regarding the spare one he has.

Thanks

I have what I believe to be a 1275 prop shaft (it came with a job lot of spares) that you are welcome to collect from SG19. It has some rust, including on the surface that seals in the gearbox tail, and I can feel a tiny amount of play in the bearings, but the yokes all look OK. Depending on where the crack/weld is on your prop shaft, maybe you could cannibalise the two to make one good one? All I would ask for is a donation of your choice to your chosen charity.

Thanks for your offer, Jonathan, but I have just bought one off of ebay. If that does not work out I may be in touch.
Thanks
